Did I really not share this before? I could have sworn I uploaded it but I can't seem to find it. Anyways, for those who remember that scrap I put together of a Dullahan awhile back, this is him.
This character will be important in the upcoming DIS storyline, so I might as well put a few reminders about Dullahans for that world here.
-They were all once victims of murder, though not necessarily of decapitation. Rather, their spirits are slowly consumed with hatred that overwrites every other part of their being (for a ghost, this means they will eventually lose stability and dissolve).
-To counteract this, they forge contracts, usually with Death as they are strongly linked to this force by their nature. This bond is strong enough that they are able to produce a liquid similar to blood that draws this force to whatever it splashes on. This tendency to establish contracts with Death has lead them to generally be considered heralds of it.
-Most contracts dullahan form not only stabilize their being by drawing on the stability of their host, but also allow them to siphon enough energy to project illusions of their heads to blend in with society.
-As the head is usually the first to be consumed by their "fire," many dullahan ensnare wisps, spirits that have long since lost any identity of their own, and bond them to themselves to act as eyes.
-No one is certain why locks open for dullahan, only that those in weaker contracts (such as Crane), don't have as much control over this ability as those in stronger contracts.
-Every dullahan has an aversion to gold, but it affects each one differently.
-Proficiency with a whip is not an inherent trait to the species, as Crane can attest.
-The ugliness they are fabled for in their legends happens to be the result of a small feud between the dullahan and valkyries. While public perception of the latter has turned around from their legends, when the legends of the headless horsemen actually turn up they remain unchanged. Thus the feud continues.
As for Crane's story, you'll have to check out DIS: Lost Causes when it comes out.
Thanks. I've been trying to figure out this world for awhile so it's good to know it's turning out well. Thankfully Lost Causes won't star too many monsters so I could focus on working out enough of the details on the dullahan, the valkyrie, and a couple of others.
